PREP SESSIONS

Performance Prep Sessions are small group sessions that give students to perform in front of each other in order to prepare for the actual Recital. These are offered for free to all students who are monthly members. Here is some helpful info:

  • Students are allowed to participate in the prep session and not participate in the actual recital. Some students may benefit from the small group feel of the class until they are ready for the actual recital. Students have the option of just attending prep classes to increase confidence and just to become a better performer!

  • Students who are super shy have the option of going in the end.

  • Soundcheck for the actual recital is done during the prep sessions so be sure to have students and teachers be prepared.

  • Each student performance is videotaped and uploaded into the teacher link on the Resources > Staff > Teacher > Recital section of the website. These prep session videos are just TEACHER LESSON AIDS ONLY and NOT to be shared with the student under any circumstance. This is a just a tool for teachers to help the student without having to require teacher attendance at all the prep sessions. Teachers should:

    • Message the adult student or parent that they saw the video and that the student did a great job. Keeping the tone positive - the teacher should provide some positive constructive feedback and an area to work on like - “Hi Karen, it was great to see Billy’s piano performance for the prep session! I thought he did a great job playing the entire piece with only a few mistakes! We still have an entire month to work on tempo and perhaps even memorizing the piece (if Billy wants to).”

  • Teachers are instructed to review each others’ students to:

    • get recital ideas for other students

    • be able to sub other recital students of other teachers and be able to provide relevant coaching/feedback such as (not dangling legs on the piano bench, timing/working with the metronome, using pedal, mic handling, etc.)
